Drive drink and drug free – getting the message across

As national drink drive figures are released, local figures still show a low percentage of those providing a positive breath test.

In West Mercia 121 people either refused to give a test or tested positive after being breath tested over June 2017 with an additional 43 people failing within Warwickshire. This equates to around 8% of the total number breathalysed across June.  An additional 107 people in West Mercia and 13 people in Warwickshire also failed the new roadside drugs test as part of the campaign. Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police are urging motorists to avoid deadly distractions at the wheel, through a national targeted mobile phone enforcement and education campaign which is running this week (10th – 16th July) to crack down on people who continue to flout the law.  The campaign is taking place across the UK and serves to remind motorists that the penalties increased earlier this year for those caught using a hand-held mobile phone while driving.  Both the fine and penalty doubled; from £100 to £200 and from 3 to 6 points. Think Bike! Bikers encouraged to attend life-saving Biker Down course

Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police, together with the Safer Roads Partnership, are reminding road users to ‘THINK BIKE’ this summer, and riders are encouraged to register their interest for future Biker Down courses in the region where they can learn essential life-saving skills.

The annual THINK BIKE campaign was launched in March this year with the aim of reducing casualties and fatalities across Warwickshire, Shropshire, Telford, Worcestershire and Herefordshire.  Over the past three years (2014-2016) in Warwickshire and West Mercia there have been 528 people either killed or seriously injured following collisions involving motorcycles. Crack down on Drink and Drug Driving this summer

The Safer Roads Partnership in West Mercia launched their summer drink & drug drive crackdown last week and since the 1st June have already detected 24 drivers over the drink drive limit and 21 drivers have failed the drug driving test. 

Drink and drug driving offences typically increase during the summer with more opportunity for people to think they can risk mixing drinking with driving.  The campaign aims to raise awareness of the consequences of driving after drinking and the impact it can have.

Safer Roads Partnership Launch DriveVR – Virtual Reality App for Young Drivers and Passengers

The Safer Roads Partnership in Warwickshire and West Mercia have launched ‘DriveVR’ – an innovative new Virtual Reality app for young drivers and passengers, providing real-life driving experiences and allowing young people to see the outcomes of bad driving decisions to encourage them not to make the same mistakes in real life.

DriveVR is one of the first Virtual Reality (VR) initiatives in the UK promoting road safety messages. Aimed at young drivers and passengers aged 16-24, DriveVR aims to highlight how a split-second decision in the car as a driver or passenger could change the rest of your life. Read more

Police continue crackdown on distracted drivers

Warwickshire Police, West Mercia Police and the Safer Roads Partnership are supporting the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) mobile phone week of action this week, by reminding motorists to avoid deadly distractions at the wheel and continuing to crack down on anyone who flouts the law.  

During the last national NPCC campaign (November 2016), 695 motorists in Warwickshire and West Mercia were caught using their mobile phone at the wheel by police and issued with fixed penalty notices. Both forces continue to enforce mobile phone safety as a priority throughout the year, and this week is no exception. Read more
