New speed enforcement sites launching across Shropshire and Telford

The Safer Roads Partnership in Warwickshire and West Mercia is launching a number of new mobile speed enforcement sites in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin, in direct response to concerns raised about the speed of vehicles travelling in each area. A new site will be launched on Priorslee Avenue in Telford and four new sites are launching across Shropshire: A495 Ellesmere, B4365 Culmington, A529 Adderley and Shrewsbury Road, Baschurch. The Safer Roads Partnership in Warwickshire and West Mercia, Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police are supporting a European day of action this Thursday (21st September) and are urging all road users to make the ‘European Day Without A Road Death’ – Project EDWARD – a reality across our region.

Project EDWARD is in its second year and has been devised by the European Traffic Police Network (TISPOL) to draw attention to the average of 70 deaths occurring every day on the roads of Europe. Read more

Take extra care on rural roads during harvest season

The Safer Roads Partnership and West Mercia Police are warning motorists of the dangers that may be present at this time of year as farmers are using the roads more when harvesting and moving their produce.

 Agriculture is one of the region’s key industries and this time of year is very busy in the farming calendar with many crops requiring harvest and transportation, often within a short window of opportunity in order to ensure consumers can enjoy the produce in prime condition. However, this burst of activity traditionally sees a rise in road collisions, many of which are preventable. Read more

All motorists encouraged to ‘Think Bike’ during national motorcycle week of action

Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police, together with the Safer Roads Partnership, are reminding road users to ‘THINK BIKE’ this week during the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) National Motorcycle Week of Action (28 Aug-3 Sept).

Reducing motorcycle-related collisions and casualties continues to be a priority for both forces and the annual THINK BIKE campaign was launched in March this year with the aim of reducing casualties and fatalities across Warwickshire, Shropshire, Telford, Worcestershire and Herefordshire. Over the past three years (2014-2016) in Warwickshire and West Mercia there have been 535 people either killed or seriously injured following collisions involving motorcycles. Read more

Drive drink and drug free – getting the message across

As national drink drive figures are released, local figures still show a low percentage of those providing a positive breath test.

In West Mercia 121 people either refused to give a test or tested positive after being breath tested over June 2017 with an additional 43 people failing within Warwickshire. This equates to around 8% of the total number breathalysed across June.  An additional 107 people in West Mercia and 13 people in Warwickshire also failed the new roadside drugs test as part of the campaign. Dying to use your phone at the wheel?

Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police are urging motorists to avoid deadly distractions at the wheel, through a national targeted mobile phone enforcement and education campaign which is running this week (10th – 16th July) to crack down on people who continue to flout the law.  The campaign is taking place across the UK and serves to remind motorists that the penalties increased earlier this year for those caught using a hand-held mobile phone while driving.  Both the fine and penalty doubled; from £100 to £200 and from 3 to 6 points. Mobile speed camera to be introduced on A495 Welshampton

The Safer Roads Partnership in Warwickshire and West Mercia is launching a new mobile speed enforcement site on the A495 in Welshampton, Shropshire in direct response to concerns raised by local residents about the speed of vehicles travelling along the 30mph road.  

 The new site launches next week (w/c 10th July 2017) and forms part of the Safer Roads Partnership’s Community Concern programme, which responds to community requests for speed enforcement. Local residents raised their concerns about the speed of traffic and asked for action to be taken. Read more

Think Bike! Bikers encouraged to attend life-saving Biker Down course

Crack down on Drink and Drug Driving this summer

The Safer Roads Partnership in West Mercia launched their summer drink & drug drive crackdown last week and since the 1st June have already detected 24 drivers over the drink drive limit and 21 drivers have failed the drug driving test. 

Drink and drug driving offences typically increase during the summer with more opportunity for people to think they can risk mixing drinking with driving.  The campaign aims to raise awareness of the consequences of driving after drinking and the impact it can have.
