Speed limits on local roads are set by the local highway authority. The Highways Agency sets the speed limit for motorways and trunk roads.

There are different speed limits for cars, vans, goods vehicles and towing vehicles and it’s important to be aware of the speed limits that are applicable to your vehicle.

Driving over the speed limit, for the road or your type of vehicle, is against the law and can be dangerous.

Full details of the different speed limits applicable for different vehicle types and roads can be found on the Directgov website.

How to identify 30mph zones

30mph speed limits are there for a reason – the difference of a few miles per hour can mean the difference between life and death for a pedestrian if hit by a car.

If there is street lighting, and no repeater signs advising of another speed limit, then the speed limit is 30mph.
